MG MGA - Seat Belts[again]
Having read all the threads on static seat belt attachment for 3 point mounting, has anybody mounted these belts WITHOUT welding only drilling, would appreciate these details. Some useless info.,petrol in Sept.1944 cost 2s0.25p a imp. gallon in the U.K.,even after 5 years of hostilities |

Do you mean 2 shillings and a farthing? Or two and threpence? s and p did not go together back then! |

I installed a set of belts in both a 62 MK11 and a 58 coupe. The 62 came with 3 point attach from new. The attach points from Clarke Spares follow their pattern. The center/tunnel attach point is designed to bolt in. The other two are designed to be welded. The outer one could be welded in without damage to a completed car. The shoulder one could be bolted at the rear but there is not enough room or material to bolt at the front. |

I installed 3 point belts in my roadster without welding anything. I used the Moss three point belts with hooks and installed the hooks through strong points at the rear bulkhead. I used the Clarke shoulder belt hardware riveted at the front and bolted with spacers and large fender washers at the rear. It is very secure and I feel as strong enough. I don't have a picture of the shoulder mounting but the hook mounting is attached. I can get images if you want them. (image also shows cutoff switch) Jim ![]() |

As you can see above, it can be done without welding. My only question is the strength of those attachment points. Difficult to tell from Jim's photo above and I hope his anchorages will take the massive jolt if used in anger. My three pointer has one anchorage bolted into the tunnel behind the seat, using a spreader plate. The over shoulder was also bolted through a spreader plate and the inner rear wing. The other lap anchor was welded (by Barry Gannon) to the top of the chassis by the rear door pillar. It is this one that would, in my opinion, be difficult to mount satisfactorily without welding. The option of bolting into floor retaining cross members in that area could well have questionable strength implications. Just my opinion, might be wrong. Steve |

Whilst it may be of questionable strength, I bolted the outside lower end of the long belt through the floor right up into the corner. Here there is a triangular gusset plate, formed as part of the floor rail. I also added a further spreader plate underneath. I came to this decision after looking at many cars at the Silverstone International meeting, where this method featured on more cars than welding. |
